A competition offered by Waterford Corporation, won by sculptor Tina O’Connell led to the Fountainhead collaboration with design and installation of this 2m diameter acrylic sphere set in a circular infinity-edge pool. The acrylic sphere was ordered by Fountainhead from a specialist UK manufacturer of components for deep-sea submarines.

The sphere was hand-cast and had a wall-thickness of 150mm (6”). The thickness of the material was necessary not only to contain the pressure created by the volume of water within the sphere but also to make it vandal-proof as it was in a public park.
